How to Prepare for a Professional Headshot Session
Your professional headshot is often the first impression you make in today's digital world. Whether it's for your LinkedIn profile, company website, or marketing materials, being well-prepared for your headshot session can make all the difference. Here's everything you need to know to look and feel confident in front of the camera.
Choose the Right Attire
Select clothing that reflects your industry and personal brand. Solid colors typically photograph better than busy patterns. Navy blue, black, deep greens, and burgundy are universally flattering choices. My personal favorite is navy blue because it does so well. In the above photos, you can see 3 of the individuals are wearing blue and it looks really well with white and darker backgrounds. However, bring a few options to give yourself variety, including both formal and business casual looks. Make sure your clothes are pressed and lint-free. If you’re planning on wearing a tie, ensure the knot of your tie is even. If you need assistance with your tie, we can help out! :)
Perfect Your Grooming
Schedule any haircuts at least a week before your session to allow your hair to settle naturally. If you don’t have a week before your headshot session, that’s okay, get a haircut as soon as possible(if needed). If you frequent the same barber you can come in after a fresh cut. For those wearing makeup, opt for a natural look that enhances your features without being overdone. Matte foundation and powder help prevent shine under studio lights. Men should shave or trim facial hair the morning of the shoot. Your headshot should show what you look like on your BEST day. It may be tempting, but avoid trying new hair styles or new looks.
Time Your Session Right
Book your headshot session for when you typically feel most energized. If you're a morning person, schedule an early appointment. Get plenty of rest the night before, and stay hydrated in the days leading up to your session. This helps ensure your skin looks its best and your eyes appear bright and alert. If you have to schedule a session in the morning and you’re NOT a morning person. Ensure you get to bed early the night before and allow yourself plenty of time to wake up and get moving(I know this is basic, but we all need to hear it). At the end of the day, if you plan your session and take care of yourself leading up to the day of the shoot, you’ll do fine.
Communicate…
Before the session, let’s discuss your goals and any specific requirements, how do you plan to use your headshots? A photo for a bio can be very different than a photo being used on a business card or marketing materials. Share examples of headshots you like and explain how you plan to use the photos. This helps ensure the final images align with your vision and professional needs. Let’s face it, most of us have concerns when taking photos. Taking a headshot can be vulnerable, if you have an something you’re concerned about, we can work through it together to ensure we capture headshots that showcase you feeling and looking confident.
